I have heard it said several times that you don't have something because you haven't asked for it. It's that classic verse from the Good Book: "Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened. Ask and it shall be given to you." I don't think there is any denying the truth of this statement. Anything I have gotten, I have gotten it by doing one of these three things. I've either sought, knocked, or asked.
I sought out good pasta a year ago. I found it. I found the best pasta. Maybe the best pasta I've ever had in my life, possibly the best pasta in the world. And it's just one town over from where I live now. If you don't believe me...well then, you're just going to have to come here to visit me. Then you'll know. But the point is that I sought it out.
I've knocked on many doors. Most of them have been opened to me. Some of them have been closed in my face right after! But first they were opened. Perhaps I needed to get my foot in the door more. Or maybe that door was not meant to stay open. I once knocked on the door of my sister's friend. She lived in a mansion and she had brothers. I simply came knocking, asking if I could be friends, if I could look around and see what a mansion looks like. The door was opened to me. It could have been closed on me. But it wasn't. If I hadn't tried, I never would have known. For me now as an adult, it seems like a silly thing to have done. The silliest part of it is that I didn't try to learn something from that family. I focused on what was there rather than trying to find out how they got there, and if it was worth it. Still, I will always remember that mother's kindness and grace towards me.
I asked for the job I'm at now. I asked several various people to hire me, whether it be directly or indirectly. I asked them with a resume, an essay, a mini-demonstration of an English lesson. I asked them with a suit and a tie and a big, clear voice. It was given to me.
We don't always get what we're looking for. Sometimes we get something better. Sometimes we get experience, a lesson, motivation to try harder. But we always get something back from an action taken. Maybe we learn from it HOW WE SHOULD HAVE asked, WHERE WE SHOULD HAVE SEARCHED, WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE DONE differently once that door was opened.
I think the point is not that it works perfectly every time because it obviously doesn't. But if we don't do anything, if we just sit there waiting, it is certain that nothing will happen.
As a final note, here's a completely unrelated picture:

Melon Bread Turtles!
I suppose we could learn a lesson from turtles, too. But I just can't think of what it could be. Hmmm...
